A want to not a need to...
One of the biggest mindset shifts for a physician offering
cash-based services from a traditional medical office for the first time is realizing
this is dealing with a want-to scenario not a need-to. A choose-to not a have-to.
What I mean by this is when a patient chooses to have an
elective cash-based service performed they do it based on emotion and the desire to feel better about themselves. All their lives they’ve gone to the doctor
because somethings not right, something hurts, or they’re worried and have to
make that appointment and are not usually happy about it.
When someone chooses to go to the doctor because it’s for something
they want to do to improve their body
or mindset, it’s a whole different story.
I’ve had many physicians tell me they were blown away when the same patient who would come in for a visit in the past and complain about a $50 co-pay would be the same one who came in with a smile on their face and hundreds of dollars of cash in their hands because they were excited about being there for the first time.

I call this a happy visit.
The patient’s happy, the doctor’s happy, the staff is happy. Where there was silence coming from that
treatment room in the past now there is often laughter. It a great way to get to know your patients
in a new light.
Offering cash-based services is not for everyone but if you
choose to remember these patients are coming in based on an emotional decision
to feel better about themselves. If you
can provide that it is often the only prescription they need.
